Knoxville, Tennessee–The Volunteers took to Haslam Field on Saturday for its first preseason practice in full pads.

Following practice, Head Coach Butch Jones, along with players Jason Croom, Josh Malone and Dylan Wiesman spoke to the media.

Head Coach Butch Jones, said, “I thought it was a productive day today with the first day of pads. We were challenged by the elements, which is a good thing because it tests your mental toughness and your fundamentals. We’ve talked about closing games out and that’s why we did what we did at the end of practice today with scrimmaging and a lot of situational football. We worked on really thinking strategically when you’re tired and understanding situational football when you’re tired at the end of the game.

“We have a long ways to go, we’re not anywhere near where we need to be in terms of playing the game, but there were a lot of valuable teaching opportunities tonight. A lot of our youngsters have to grow up in a hurry. I think they are competing, which is what you want to see, but it’s taking care of fundamentals and penalties. There were too many pre-snap penalties today, especially at the end of practice when the mental fatigue started to settle in a little bit. That’s part of being a mentally tough football team, but that’s what training camp is about as well.”
